Find Yancey County Detention Center Releases

To find someone released from Yancey County Detention Center, start with the county custody record and identify whether the person went into the community or moved to another agency. A Yancey County release may follow bond, a court order, a short sentence, or another authorized event. A transfer ends detention at this jail but does not end custody. The public feed, detention staff, release record, and court file each answer a different part of the question. Reading them together provides a sound path from a name to a confirmed custody outcome.

Yancey Detention Release Paths

The Yancey County Detention Center is a county jail operated by the Sheriff’s Office. It holds people awaiting trial, people serving short local sentences, and convicted people awaiting transport to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. Those groups leave by different routes. Bond, dismissal, time served, sentence completion, or another court-authorized event may lead into the community. Transport to NCDAC or another jail is a transfer. The local booking closes, but confinement continues under a new custodian.

The official mixed-status feed uses OUT and TRANSFERRED. OUT, paired with a release date, is the clearest public sign that Yancey custody ended without the feed naming a receiver. TRANSFERRED warns that another agency may hold the person. Neither code consistently explains the legal reason, and a Release Date can mean release from this facility rather than freedom from all custody.

Confirm a Yancey Jail Release

Use the county path before a state or federal locator unless a transfer record points elsewhere. The sheriff’s interface calls its feature Recent Arrests, yet the underlying source contains current, released, transferred, and older records. It is not merely a current roster. Search by name, then read the Booked Date, Custody Status, Custody Status Date, Release Date when present, inmate ID, and reporting agency. Status update time and release time may differ.

  1. Search the sheriff feed and open the plausible record. Match more than a name when identifiers are available.
  2. Read the exact custody code. Do not translate TRANSFERRED into released home.
  3. Record the explicit Release Date and Custody Status Date. Feed order is not a release timeline.
  4. Call detention at 828-682-2124 when the event is recent or the fields conflict.
  5. Request the existing booking and release record for the reason, disposition, and public transfer destination.
  6. Compare the Yancey court file for the order or judgment that explains the legal basis.
Custody boundary: a county roster documents Yancey jail custody. It does not replace NCDAC, BOP, USMS, or ICE records after a supported transfer.

The Yancey County released inmate search explains the broader cross-system sequence. If Yancey lists TRANSFERRED and state admission follows, use NCDAC Offender Public Information. If the receiver is another county, contact that jail. A federal docket or transfer record must support use of BOP, USMS, or ICE channels.

Yancey Release Record Requests

The public feed does not consistently state whether release occurred through bond, recognizance, dismissal, time served, sentence completion, or another action. A narrow request should identify the person, approximate booking date, inmate ID if known, and the particular existing record. Ask for booked date and time, custody-status history, actual release date and time, recorded release type, public transfer destination, and the booking photograph if needed for identification.

Yancey County instructs requesters to use its public-record request process. The completed form may be emailed to info@yanceycountync.gov or delivered to the County Manager’s Office, 110 Town Square, Room 11, Burnsville, NC 28714. Electronic copies can be requested. No fixed local fee, response deadline, or guaranteed archive span was found. Ask for a cost estimate before reproduction if cost may apply.

Transfer
A move to another custodian. It is not a community release.
Disposition
The court’s resolution or action in the criminal case.
Detainer
A request or legal basis for another authority to take custody.

The jail record and court file are companion records. The sheriff records physical custody. The Yancey clerk holds the case disposition. A court order may authorize release before jail processing ends, while another hold may prevent departure. Request both when the exact reason and time matter.

Yancey Detention Records Contact

Person-specific custody questions should go to detention staff. Office-counter hours shown by the sheriff interface should be confirmed by phone because the source attached an incorrect time-zone label. No official promise of a round-the-clock public-record counter was located.

The county submission address is separate from the detention location. Routine records requests follow the County Manager route unless staff gives different instructions. Immediate status questions belong with detention, while case judgments belong with the Clerk of Superior Court at 110 Towne Square, Room 5.

About Yancey County Detention

The official county sheriff page places the jail in the basement level of the county courthouse. Its role is local. It is not an NCDAC prison, a federal institution, or an ICE detention center. A person awaiting state transport may remain here temporarily after conviction, but state placement belongs to NCDAC and can change.

The county’s Release, Transfers and Continued Care policy addresses preparation when a release date is known and continuity of health care during qualifying releases and transfers. It supports the operational difference between leaving custody and moving to another facility. Protected health information is not part of a public release record, so requests should stay focused on existing custody and movement fields.

The official county source supplies the clearest visual confirmation of the Sheriff’s Office and detention-center information. The following capture comes from that county facility page.

It anchors the detention contact and location in an official county source rather than an unofficial jail directory.

Yancey Jail Remains Downtown

The courthouse-basement location has an important history and a current accuracy issue. The county page still identifies the jail there. A 2024 news report described a new Public Safety Facility for sheriff, emergency-management, and 911 functions and noted that sheriff and jail operations had occupied the courthouse since its 1964–65 construction. That report did not establish that detention operations moved.

Use the official 4 East Main Street detention address until Yancey County publishes an operational change. Do not infer a new jail location from construction news. Anyone arranging a records visit, approved pickup, or contact with staff should call first. The same caution applies to a physical exit door or waiting area because no official source established either.

Location check: the new public-safety project did not, by itself, prove that the courthouse-basement detention center was replaced.

Read Yancey Release Fields

The mixed feed offers more useful release detail than its Recent Arrests label implies. During the July 30, 2026 research observation, it included OUT, TRANSFERRED, IN, and UNSUPERVISED objects, some with release dates and some without. The snapshot also reached far beyond a short recent-release window. Those observations show why a search must use explicit fields, not the feature name or the first ten displayed items.

A safely presented capture from the official Yancey inmate feed demonstrates the mixed-status structure.

The status, status date, booked date, and release date must be read as separate fields. An identity disappearing from the visible list is never enough confirmation.

After a Yancey Jail Release

No official source established fixed release-processing times, a public waiting zone, property-return rules, gate money, a jail-issued identification policy, or weekend and holiday procedures. Call detention before planning a pickup. Ask where a released person may meet an approved ride and whether processing is complete. Do not wait at an assumed courthouse door.

Yancey Transportation Authority offers accessible demand-response transportation and other nonemergency service, but it does not promise jail-door or after-hours pickup. Its number is 828-682-6144. Confirm service and timing directly, then confirm the allowed pickup point with detention staff. A transfer does not call for community transportation because the receiving authority controls the movement.

For a state-bound person, continue with Release Date Lookup and NCDAC status. For an OUT record, court terms or post-release supervision may still apply. Release from the building and complete discharge of a sentence are different events.

Keep a brief verification log when records change. Note the name searched, inmate ID, source, status, explicit release date, and the time checked. If staff provides a transfer destination, record the receiving agency and search that agency next. This simple separation keeps an older screenshot or cached result from overriding a newer official custody record.
